It's not called the beautiful game for nothing; try explaining beauty.
Personally, I just got hooked as a kid, and it's hard to shake off. It's completely unique, in that it combines grace and elegance with aggression and physical force (and no, rugby is not graceful!); art with with discipline and tactical thinking; Kevin Keegan with perms and poetry (has anyone else heard that poem he wrote for John Toshack when they both played for Liverpool?).
Also, the pitch sizes vary. Arsenal, for example, have the shortest pitch of all 92 football league teams.
While we're in such a literary mood, did anyone else see that Terrible Vegetables had written a book that made it into the Big Read?
Oh dear. That says a lot about British reading habits.
